Frequently Asked Questions

What is FileTag?

FileTag is a free AI-powered tool that automatically analyzes your documents, extracts key information, and renames your files with descriptive, organized filenames. It also embeds the extracted metadata directly into your files, making them easier to search and organize.

What file types are supported?

FileTag currently supports:

  • PDF documents — invoices, receipts, contracts, statements, forms, and any other PDF
  • Images — JPEG, PNG, and other common image formats containing document scans or photos

Whether it's a bank statement, medical bill, tax document, or business contract, FileTag can extract and organize the relevant information.

What metadata does FileTag extract?

FileTag's AI analyzes your document and extracts:

  • Document date — the primary date on the document (invoice date, statement date, etc.)
  • Vendor or issuer — the company, organization, or person who created the document
  • Document type — invoice, receipt, contract, statement, letter, etc.
  • Document number — invoice number, reference number, or other identifiers
  • Amounts — total amounts, when applicable

This metadata is used to generate smart filenames and is embedded into the file itself for better searchability.

How accurate is the extraction?

FileTag is powered by Gemina, an AI-powered document processing platform trusted by product teams and developers, achieving up to 99% accuracy on structured documents. Accuracy may vary depending on document quality, formatting, and legibility.

What happens to my files? Is it secure?

Your privacy is our priority:

  • Temporary processing — files are processed in memory and not permanently stored
  • Auto-deletion — any temporary data is automatically deleted within 24 hours
  • No account required — we don't collect personal information or require signup
  • Encrypted transfer — all uploads use HTTPS encryption

For more details, see our Privacy Policy.

Is there a file size limit?

Yes, files are limited to 10MB each. This covers most standard documents. If you need to process larger files or bulk documents, consider using the full Gemina platform.

How many files can I process?

FileTag allows up to 50 files per day for free. This limit resets every 24 hours. For unlimited processing, check out Gemina's plans.

Do I need to create an account?

No. FileTag is completely free to use without any signup or registration. Just upload your document and download the result.

What filename formats are available?

FileTag offers three naming patterns, each with a lean (3 fields) or full (4 fields) option:

  • Date first2024-01-15_Acme-Corp_Invoice_12345.pdf
  • Type firstInvoice_Acme-Corp_12345_2024-01-15.pdf
  • Vendor firstAcme-Corp_Invoice_12345_2024-01-15.pdf

Your preference is saved automatically, so you don't need to select it each time.

What are some common use cases?

People use FileTag to organize:

  • Tax documents — receipts, invoices, and deductions for tax season
  • Business expenses — vendor invoices, contractor receipts, utility bills
  • Personal finances — bank statements, credit card statements, bills
  • Medical records — insurance statements, medical bills, prescriptions
